About the Job

The Maintenance Foreman is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Indiana War Memorials property.

The Indiana War Memorials maintains 24 acres in the downtown area which includes:
Soldiers and Sailors Monument, University Park, Indiana War Memorial, American Legion Mall, Veterans Memorial Plaza and USS Indianapolis.


* Makes both routine and non-routine masonry, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical repairs and replacements;

* Responsible for the daily transport, supervision, accuracy and work assignments of assigned offenders

* Provides preventative maintenance and repairs to specialized equipment in one area of the institution that requires a combination of duties in plumbing, electricity and/or carpentry;

* Assists a skilled tradesperson on major projects including installation of new plumbing or electrical equipment in an entire area, forming and pouring sidewalks, steps and ramps;

* Installing and de-installing temporary and permanent exhibits; ensuring that interactive elements work properly; replacing lights; constructing and refurbishing props; and maintaining cleanliness of all exhibit areas. May also advise on design of interactives and other exhibit elements.

* Assists in the planning and coordination of the construction, maintenance and installation of temporary and permanent exhibits at the Indiana War Memorial properties.

* Maintains lighting in exhibit areas according to specifications.

* Maintains exhibit areas using proper artifact cleaning techniques.

* Assists in the preparation of galleries and exhibit spaces for installation of exhibits, including assembly, dismantling, relocation and rehabilitation of temporary and permanent exhibit structures, alterations to facilities and support activities.

* Assists when needed in constructing and installing exhibits. This may include creating or repairing wood and other components, molding shapes of wood or plastic to create specialized mounts, reading and interpreting plans and adjusting for scale, assembling materials in various ways, and patching and painting walls.

* Assists in the creation and repair of interactive exhibit elements.

* Is called upon to exercise creativity and problem-solving skills

* Serves on exhibition planning teams as needed

* Repairs small engines including tractors and lawnmowers;

* Occasionally does light welding;

* Installs Formica tops, tile, window glass, doors, wiring and conduits, plumbing fixtures and other varied items;

What we're looking for

* Ability to use and repair a wide variety of hand and power tools, vehicles and small engines;

* Must provide full range of preventative and emergency maintenance services required to preserve Commission structures and parklands, including routine and special maintenance, capitol improvements, routine and special custodial services and contract administration

* Working knowledge of and ability to use skills in carpentry, welding, masonry, plumbing and determining and making repairs to electrical and mechanical equipment;

* Complete all work assignments in a timely manner and in compliance with existing codes and safety standards.

* Ability to work on own initiative with minimal supervision, diagnose problems, maintain system component and perform repairs.

* Ensure compliance with all applicable IOSHA rules in the workplace.

* Ability to operate heavy equipment;

* Ability to set tile, finish concrete and plaster;

* Ability to coordinate the work of others;

* Ability to read and follow guidelines and blueprints and to handle simple mathematical problem when making repairs;

* Must have a valid driver's license.

* Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds and stand on feet for long periods of time
